Description: Mission: Readiness is seeking a motivated self-starter looking to gain practical skills and professional experience with advocacy, policy and/or nonprofit work in Washington, DC. As an intern with Mission: Readiness, you have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by: working with senior leaders to develop and execute public policy efforts related to early childhood & K-12 education, health & fitness, and anti-poverty; conducting and communicating policy research; assisting in preparation of press events, policy initiatives and meetings with key leaders; and leading the organization’s day-to-day tasks. You will be an integral member of the Mission: Readiness team, attending staff meetings, local DC events, and contributing toward organizational goals.

Mission: Readiness strives for interns to walk away with: (1) a comprehensive understanding of the current policy environment regarding education, health, and military preparedness; (2) a unique and desirable skill set on how to staff high-level leaders; (3) knowledge of the threats to national security as a result of 71 percent of 17- to 24-year olds who are ineligible serve in the military; (4) enhanced knowledge of the military community, specifically senior officers; (5) a firm grasp of how a national nonprofit advocacy organization operates and advances state and federal policies; (6) a distinct set of professional skills and experience that carries into future career and academic pursuits.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the team to create an active presence of retired admirals and generals across the country

  • Provide input and assist in execution of action plans to advance policy opportunities and advocacy efforts at the state and federal levels (meetings with members of Congress and state policymakers, sign-on letters, media strategies, etc.)

  • Assist in writing policy memos, event summaries, and conducting research as needed

  • Serve as a lead on day-to-day organizational tasks and projects

Skills, Competencies and Knowledge Desired for the Position:

  • Interest in and familiarity with legislative processes and policy, particularly related to education, fitness, and/or the military

  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing

  • Interpersonal skills and confidence interfacing with Mission: Readiness staff, senior leaders and external partners

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and respond flexibly to changing priorities, while meeting deadlines

  • Experience with or knowledge of the military community

Schedule and Compensation: The ideal candidate will start by June 4, 2018. You may work up to 40 hours per week. This position is unpaid, but credits may be offered to those enrolled in an accredited university or certified program.

Mission: Readiness is a nonprofit national security organization of more than 700 retired admirals and generals who are concerned that 71% of America’s youth are ineligible to serve in the military because they are too poorly educated, too overweight, and/or have a record of crime abuse. Mission: Readiness staff work directly with retired admirals and generals to advocate for research-proven investments related to education and health policies that ultimately contribute to the long-term success and preparedness of America’s youth.
