The Opportunity

The Council for a Strong America seeks an experienced and passionate President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization, building upon its strong history and reputation to increase funding, awareness, and impact while continuing to improve the lives of children.

The President & CEO will ensure the strategic and operational effectiveness of the organization, working closely with the Board of Directors and senior leadership on issues of governance, finance, fund development, and strategic vision. The President & CEO will provide exceptional leadership and management and serve as a key advocate and spokesperson for the Council for a Strong America and all of its constituents, and members. This is a tremendous opportunity for a motivated professional with strong leadership skills and strategic expertise to join an innovative organization, taking a bold approach to helping our nation’s at-risk children be happy, healthy and successful.

The primary responsibilities of the President & CEO will include but are not limited to:

  •  Working with the board, staff, and members to create an innovative strategic plan.
  •  Analyzing with a fresh perspective the business model for delivering CSA’s information and programs, used by a wide variety of sectors.
  •  Representing CSA to its constituents through a variety of channels including media interviews, events, and other speaking engagements, and increasing awareness of CSA’s relevance and impact.
  •  Motivating and inspiring staff to continue to perform at the highest levels with creativity and dedication to the mission of CSA and supporting the Board of Directors as it carries out its governance responsibilities.

Candidate Profile

The President & CEO will be an inspiring, energetic, and deeply empathetic leader who is passionate about providing resources and support to the five key membership organizations. The President & CEO works collaboratively with the Board of Directors, along the CSA team to develop and achieve its long-term vision. The President & CEO will be a key force in ensuring CSA’s continued strength and contributions through the coming years. Ideal candidates will have significant experience working with a mission-driven organization.

Strong candidates will also possess skills and characteristics in the following core areas:

Organizational Leadership and People Management

The President & CEO will be a seasoned leader with strong staff and financial management experience and the ability to retain, build, mentor, and motivate a talented staff. Other desired leadership and management skills include:

  •  A track record of sound financial planning, oversight, and accountability in an organization of comparable size and complexity.
  •  A management approach that is collegial, growth and goal-oriented, and rooted in accountability, teamwork, and productivity.
  •  Experience working closely with a Board of Directors, providing updates, insight, and guidance that advance organizational goals.
  •  The President & CEO possesses the ability to inspire a staff and volunteers with a diverse set of skills, provide a productive work environment and professional growth opportunities that result in team cohesion and camaraderie.
  •  The ideal candidate will understand and implement best management practices, including compelling communication messages and effective marketing strategies, management succession, and most importantly, ensuring that overall day-to-day operations are aligned with strategic goals.

Communications and Fundraising

As the primary spokesperson and advocate for the Council for a Strong America, the President & CEO will be an articulate and empathetic spokesperson who drives attention to and support for CSA’s mission with a wide range of constituents, including donors, partners, and elected officials. Key skills in this area include:

  •  The President & CEO is an Ambassador for CSA, sharing the mission and vision with the outside world and helping to expand the institution’s role more broadly.
  •  S/he has exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build and sustain strong support across a wide range of stakeholders including staff, Board, donors, partners and the members.
  •  Demonstrated track record of growing contributed revenue through the identification, cultivation, and successful solicitation of new donors from a range of sources (corporate, foundation, and individual).
  •  A strategic approach to fundraising, including the ability to leverage board and staff expertise to develop and execute on an effective plan.
  • Exceptional communications and relationship building skills, including the ability to inspire and educate various constituencies, to help advocate for our nation’s at-risk children.


Vision and Strategy

The President & CEO will work with the Board of Directors in a highly collaborative manner to identify the organization’s future goals and objectives and clearly articulate CSA’s vision and mission. Desired skills and experiences in this area include:

  •  Experience working closely with a committed and engaged Board of Directors on creating and implementing an organizational strategy.
  •  The ability to translate strategy into clear, measurable objectives for the Board of Directors and staff.
  •  Previous experience measurably advancing a mission or cause through the development and execution of a strategic plan that engaged a diverse range of stakeholders.
  •  S/he can successfully leverage the skills and talents of a Board and staff to execute a strategic plan, while working closely with the various constituents on the plan’s implementation and evaluation.
  • The President & CEO has the drive and passion to remain at the forefront of the sector and continues to develop new and unique opportunities to serve the mission.
